SUSTAINABLE AND RESILIENT LIVELIHOODS, FOOD AND NUTRITION SECURITY
The Challenge
The livelihoods of most Malawian families are dependent on smallholder, rain-fed agriculture, making their very survival extremely vulnerable to climate shocks like floods and droughts. This precariousness leads to chronic food insecurity and malnutrition, preventing households from investing in education, health, or economic opportunities.
OSSEDI's Strategic Response
The livelihoods of most Malawian families are dependent on smallholder, rain-fed agriculture, making their very survival extremely vulnerable to climate shocks like floods and droughts. This precariousness leads to chronic food insecurity and malnutrition, preventing households from investing in education, health, or economic opportunities.
Flagship Projects and Demonstrated Impact
- Increased the ability of over 20,000 households to maintain food security during climate extremes by integrating climate-smart agriculture with financial safety nets
- Improved Community Food Security Through Ecosystem Restoration. Our programs have enhanced the long-term productive capacity of land for over 200,000 households, ensuring a more stable and sustainable foundation for food production through large-scale landscape restoration (through projects like Restore Africa – RESAF project).
- Strengthened the food security of entire communities recovering from Cyclones and other crises by providing support for sustainable agriculture and protecting vital natural resources (through projects like Climate Just Communities-CJC, Strengthened Resilience through Complimentary Livelihood Interventions Project- STRECOLI etc.)
